Marc-Laurent Magnier's hexagonal crystal texture gives a delightfully
alien tinge to the station. Yes, I have since fixed the "vanishing point"
texture problem inside the socket. The groves created by NOR mapping
(bump-mapping) are pretty, but given the scale of the station
my slide rule says those groves are about a foot and a half deep.
Here's the station with and without NOR mapping.
I think I'll remove the NOR mapping entirely
(except for on the axis and reactor, where it looks
really really retro).
Assorted works in progress shots. The main parts seem to be in place.
The big problems start now. I have to put in all the tiny windows in the
cones and detail the interior of the three hangar bays in the oval box
at the bottom. Plus cut some groves in the axis of the three smaller units
for the petals of the clamshell to slide in, and add the light on a stick
at the top of the center cone.
The mesh as it stands is a pretty accurate duplicate of the K-7 station
from Star Trek. Maybe a little too accurate. When anybody looks
at it the first thing that will pop into their head is a tribble.
The basic clamshell module is from the Douglas Aircraft design.
What if the station is built just using those modules?
